Primary Sceatta, Vernus Type

Primary Sceatta (c 680 – 710 AD); Vernus Group, BMC Type 3b, Metcalf ‘e’. 1.17g. (N. -, S. 783). REF: WLQUMW.

Obverse: Crude head with quill-like hair right, cross in front. Reverse: Pellet in circle centre surrounded by ‘L’ and ‘I’ pairs, all within a beaded square bounded by crude runic symbols.

An excellent example of a rare East Anglian sceatta, the SCBI and EMC reference just 10 examples; nice dusty grey toning, good metal, and a strong well-centred strike. gVF.
