Continental Sceatta, Series E Variety L

Continental Sceatta; Series E, Variety L. 1.15g. (N. 49, S. 790L, Abramson 87/40). REF: LBJSDH.

Obverse: Plumed bird facing right, circle below right. Reverse: Pellet in circle centre surrounded by four pellet in circle motifs separated by pellet trefoils, all in pellet square.

A sharply struck example, corrosion free and pleasantly toned. A perfect obverse strike with plenty of character. gVF.

Provenance:

Found near Dover, August 2017.

When he wrote ‘Thrymsas and Sceattas’ (1993) Metcalf thought ‘L’ the final variety of the type, this based on weight, and the slightly lower silver content (89% and 88%) of the two specimens tested. This full example appears to be of good metal, but is indeed about 0.1g lighter than the average weight of an early Series E (D.M. Metcalf, ‘Thrymsas and Sceattas in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford’, p. 207-211).
