Aethelred II Long Cross Type Penny

Aethelred II (978 – 1016 AD) Long Cross Type Penny; Cambridge, Eadwine. 1.56g. (N. 774, S. 1151). REF: PRON13.

Full weight, and nicely toned; pecks on both sides but they do not perforate the coin. Scarce mint. nVF.

Aethelred II paid huge sums of money to Danish raiders in an attempt to buy them off, and as is the case here much of this coinage (used in a country that did not produce coins at the time) was tested with vigour.
