Viking York Cnut Penny

Viking York (c. 890 – 910 AD) Cnut Penny; Danish Northumbria. 1.37g. (N. 497, S. 991). REF: UY9LBQ.

Obverse: Central inverted patriarchal cross, four pellets around lower cross, CNVT at the end of each cross limb, R.:E::X:: between. Reverse: Central cross patée flanked by two pellets all within wire circle, inscription around +EB::IAI::CEC::IV::

A good example of the type which is scarcer than its cousin N. 501 (the EMC contains 92 examples but almost 400 of type N. 501). A little weakness in parts of the reverse legend, and a minor surface flaw to obverse centre. Dark obverse, gold-brown toned reverse. These dies EMC: 1009.0146 (SCBI: 9/146, Ashmolean Museum). About very fine.
