Viking York Cnut Mirabila Fecit Penny

Viking York (c. 890 – 910 AD) Cnut ‘Mirabila Fecit’ Type Penny; Danish Northumbria. 1.29g. (N. 511, S. 998). REF: 1KATQV.

Obverse: Central inverted patriarchal cross, four pellets around lower cross, CNVT at the end of each cross limb, +REX between. Reverse: Central cross patée flanked by two pellets all within beaded circle, inscription around +MIRABILA FECIT.

A sharp strike, and pleasant old grey/brown cabinet toning. You would have to hunt hard to find a better example of this scarce issue. The EMC/SCBI databases contain just 37 coins of this Mirabila type (there are other variations but their total is still small), several of which are partial or complete die matches with this coin. This strongly suggests a short production run, possibly to coin and distribute the spoils of war. See EMC: 1004.0532 (SCBI: 4/532, Royal Collection, Copenhagen). Rare. Good very fine.
