Primary Sceatta, Vernus Type

Primary Sceatta (c 680 – 710 AD); Vernus Group, BMC Type 3b, Metcalf ‘f’. 1.19g. (N. -, S. 783). REF: S05T1R.

Obverse: Crude head with quill-like hair right, ‘VER’ in front. Reverse: Pellet in circle centre surrounded by ‘V’ and ‘I’ pairs, all within a beaded square bounded by crude symbols.

The SCBI and EMC reference just 10 ‘Vernus Group One’ examples; a little polished but of excellent metal. See D. M. Metcalf, ‘Thrymsas and Sceattas in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford’, Vol. 1., p. 143. VF.
