Edward the Confessor (1042 – 1066 AD) Pyramids Type Penny; Shrewsbury, Godwine. 1.34g. (N. 831, S. 1184). REF: EFXT7R.

Nice grey tone, good metal, good portrait, weakness at 1.30pm on the obverse and corresponding weakness on the reverse from an ‘off-flat’ strike. Rare; the EMC/SCBI contains 11 examples of Pyramids type pennies minted at Shrewsbury. Same dies as EMC: 1020.1327 (SCBI: 20/1327, Mack Collection). VF.

Provenance:

Baldwin’s, 1962 (with ticket).

N. 831 is a scarce type, the EMC and SCBI list just 365 coins between them. The Pyramid type is a little unusual in that the bulk of the coins were produced in York and Chester, rather than the major southern mints.
