Cnut Quatrefoil Type Penny

Cnut (1016 – 1035 AD) Quatrefoil Type Penny; London, Bruman. 1.17g. (N. 781 var., S. 1157 var.). REF: M0WHCF.

Obverse: Draped, crowned bust left, inscription around +CNVT REX ANGLOR: quatrefoil of pellets behind bust. Reverse: Voided long cross limbs terminating at the inscription, each quarter intersected by two curves and a dot making up a central quatrefoil, additional single pellets and a trefoil of pellets without each cusp, around +BR / VM: / ANOL / VND (N and D ligate).

The EMC/SCBI record eight Quatrefoil examples with the cross of four pellets on the obverse, and a further handful with single pellets or a pellet trefoil in the same place. Little research has been conducted on these variants, pellet examples all seem to be from south eastern mints, whilst those with solid crosses are typically from Lincoln and East Anglia. Same dies as EMC: 1014.2235 (SCBI: 14/2235, Royal Collection Copenhagen). Lightly toned silver and a superb portrait. gVF.
