Alfred the Great Two Line Type Penny

Alfred the Great (871 – 899 AD) Two Line Type Penny; Third Coinage, Mercia, Cuthberht. 1.48g. (N. 637, S. 1066). REF: YK4RTV.

Obverse: Central cross, inscription around +ÆLF ED RE. Reverse: Central line of a single central pellet, and pellet trefoils at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock, dividing inscription CVDB / ERNT.

A clear strike, of sound metal, and pleasant mid grey/brown toning. Two small peck marks, one on each side of the coin, and a tiny ancient edge split at 8 pm (short, stable, only seen at high magnification). Good very fine.
