Aethelred II First Hand Type Penny

Aethelred II (978 – 1016 AD) First Hand Type Penny; Norwich, Brantinc. 1.65g. (N. 766 var., S. 1144 var.) REF: B0K13O.

Obverse: Draped diademed portrait right, inscription around ÆĐELRED REX ANGLOX. Reverse: Downward facing hand dividing transposed omega and alpha symbols,  inscription around +BRANTINC MO NORDPIC.

Pleasant black tone with silver highlights, and typically of fine style as often found on First Hand type pennies minted in East Anglia. Some areas of weakness. Scarce, and exceptionally rare with the alpha and omega transposed. Same reverse die as EMC: 1002.0799 (SCBI: 2/799, Huntarian Museum Glasgow). Very fine.
